Be Sure to Check Out the Demask Walls in Florence, Italy

Something that you will find throughout Italy in its architecture are Demask walls. However, any one can do this at home with a little metallic paint and an imagination. But there is nothing better than seeing this in Italy with your own eyes. You can go to Florence and see much of this throughout the city.

As for what a Demask pattern is, it is a pattern that covers an entire wall with the same design and the design is offset. This actually started sometime in the 1400s after many plagues had been battled and wars had been fought. It then moved on with the linens textile industry, but it then spread to other items, such as furniture. No longer were Demask walls just Demask walls, but you had Demask furniture as well. When you think about it, your wallpaper has an offset pattern that continues over and over. This is the same concept.

But when you visit Florence and you look at the amazing architecture and you look at real Demask walls, you can’t help but to be mesmerized at how that same pattern could be repeated again and again without much deviation in the design. The individuals who created these walls definitely knew what they were doing. It’s not like the wallpaper on your walls where it has been printed by a printing press. These walls were actually made by hand.

And to think that at one time in Florence and all areas of Italy, anyone caught sharing the secret of Demask walls would be beheaded. It was a secret that was heavily guarded and no one would be caught dead sharing it. Just think of how the Italians would feel if they saw how we adorn our walls with the same concept now. Perhaps they would be amazed or they would feel like beheading the entire world. Either way, Demask walls are great to admire while in Florence.
